Enrollment for lessons is open

Lessons for the new school year begin September 26!

Making Music Matters is preparing for a busy year, as we expect to enroll more than 500 Boston Public School students this month.

Our free instrumental music lessons in the clarinet, flute, trumpet and violin are offered to 3rd grade students at the Beethoven School, 4th and 5th grade students at the Philbrick School, and 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students at the Bates School, Conley School, Ohrenberger School, and Mozart School.  This is the first year 3rd grade students from the Conley School are eligible.

3rd grade students receive instruction on multiple instruments.  4th and 5th grade students choose one instrument to play throughout the year.

Making Music Matters lessons occur in the schools during the school day, making it both unique and accessible to our students.

In order to secure a seat in a lesson, enrollment forms must be completed and returned to the school with a $50 money order to pay for the cost of the instrument rental for the course of the school year. Checks are not accepted for instrument rental.  Incomplete enrollment packets will be returned home.

Enrollment packets have been distributed to eligible students at their schools.  They are, also, available to print in the "For Parents" section of mmmboston.org.  Additionally, enrollment packets in Spanish are available in hard copy from the schools and for print in the "For Parents" section of mmmboston.org.

Seats in the lessons are filled on a first come, first serve basis.

Almost halfway to our Spring Fundraiser 2017 goal

Help us reach our goal so that we can continue to bring Making Music Matters to six Boston Public Schools!

We are asking our friends and families to help us raise $6,000 to support our program so that we can continue to bring high quality music education to BPS students. Many have responded, and we are sincerely thankful. For those who have not yet contributed, there is still time!

Some don't know that Making Music Matters instructors also teach at local music schools including Brookline Music School, the Suzuki School of Newton, All Newton Music School, and Rivers School Conservatory. These are all highly regarded music schools and conservatories that charge over $1,000 per year for music lessons. Making Music Matters lessons are free, with parents required to pay only the small instrument rental fee.

Here is what some of our donors this spring are saying about our program:

Making Music Matters enrolls 436 students

Clarinet students at the Conley School in Roslindale work on "Jingle Bells" during their Making Music Matters lesson with their instructor, Mr. V.

Making Music Matters is off to a strong start with 436 students enrolled this fall. We are pleased to be serving 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at six Boston Public Schools.

Our schools include the Bates, Beethoven, Conley, Mozart, Ohrenberger, and Philbrick schools. Students are from Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, and West Roxbury neighborhoods.

Weekly lessons began in September. Students from 3rd grade will perform in their first mini concerts of the year early in November, followed by the 4th and 5th grade students' concerts, also in November. Performances are held in the schools during the school day, and attended by family, friends, and classmates.
